Design Considering Driving Safety

Since apps running on Pleos Connect are intended to be used while driving, they must be designed with a UX that can be operated intuitively and stably with one hand so as not to distract the driver. Follow the AAOS Driver Distraction Guidelines and pay attention to the following principles in design and development.

Restrictions and Prohibitions While Driving

  • Functions that distract the driver (such as video playback, games, scrolling long texts, and complex form inputs) may be restricted or prohibited while driving.
  • The app must implement logic that detects when the vehicle is in motion and automatically reduces or disables UI/features accordingly.
  • Games, entertainment, detailed settings menus, etc., must be accessible only when the vehicle is stopped or parked.

Constraints by app category

UX Design Principles to Prevent Driver Distraction

Minimize Visual Distraction

  • Display important information promptly and accurately within the driver’s line of sight, utilizing HUDs, clusters, OSDs, etc.
  • Do not display videos, animations, or moving images while driving.
  • Keep image exposure to a minimum while driving. The following exceptions are allowed.
    • One static image on the in-use screen background for content context (for example, album art, advertiser logo)
    • Icons in the content browse window
    • Lane/junction guidance images in navigation apps

Information Architecture·Interaction

  • Prioritize driving-related information (e.g., navigation route guidance), and place essential information in the most intuitive location.
  • Simplify screen and menu structure so users can reach the desired function within 2–3 actions (tap/click).
  • Place frequently used functions on the first screen or top area, and avoid overusing dropdowns and multi-level menus.
  • Ensure that app elements do not move automatically while driving and operate only in response to user actions.
  • Visual/Audio priority: Give priority to audio important for driving (e.g., navigation voice guidance), and minimize volume or pause media during such events. Users must be able to reduce volume to muted level.

Touch Interaction Optimization

  • Apply large touch targets, high contrast, and minimal text patterns in accordance with the Pleos Connect UI Design Guide.
  • Minimize touchscreen interactions and support interaction through voice commands and physical buttons.
  • Do not induce distracting activities such as playing games, web surfing, or fitness.
  • Button size must be at least 125×125 mm. Maintain a spacing of at least 4 mm between buttons and touch target areas to minimize accidental taps.

Minimize Text Input · Prioritize Voice · Presets

  • Even for search and login, prioritize preset selection, recent items, and voice over keyboard input.
  • The music app should place preset playlists, “Recently Played,” and “Favorites” on the first screen.
